Realizing it has been some time since I bought a photography book I made a point of taking a look to see what was on offer during my latest trip to the bookstore.

Lots of things I would like to buy but what I ended up purchasing was Helmut Newton/Alice Spring’s “us and them”. I’m familiar with Helmut’s fashion work and Playboy work (naturally) but what most impressed me with this book was the intimacy of it. The celebrity work was there of course in the section ‘them’, but before that is where the really interesting things happen. And the introduction to the work of Springs was welcome too.

There was a thread of honesty and intimacy through these photographs that I’ve grasped at myself lately, also, I like the simplicity of the design and layout of the book. Very little to distract. Something I’ve tried before with two volumes and wasn’t pleased with the results. I will be giving it another go.

Incidentally I’ve found, as in this case, that used and discount booksellers have been better hunting grounds for photography books lately. New this book goes for $100+.

A bit disappointed in my attempts to make Blurb work for photo books. No real fault of the service as I can see where it would probably work just fine for some types of work but some of my styling (specifically that with heave blur and softness) just isn’t compatible with their printing process. So I am on the lookout for alternatives to producing small portfolios or “photographic chapbooks”.
